To keep your earrings looking their best, it's a good idea to get in the habit of a regular cleaning regime. It probably sounds like just another chore but consider this - everything your face and hair come into contact with, so do your earrings. Body oils, makeup, hairspray - you name it. Gross right?
It doesn't have to cost a fortune and you don't need to send them away - do it all in the comfort of your own home. Here’s some quick easy steps to get them sparkling again.
How To Clean Earrings at Home
You don't need any fancy cleaning solutions or gadgets to get started, some mild dishwashing detergent will do the job. There are many ways to clean women's earrings, depending on what they’re made from. Check out our tips below for how to clean your earrings at home quickly and easily.
Firstly, gather up all your pieces that are in need of some love and give them a quick ‘once over’ before you start cleaning. Check for any loose stones, broken links or clasps etc before you start cleaning your earrings. If anything needs fixing just pop it aside - you don’t want to damage it any further.
Steps to Clean Your Earrings at Home
- Try to avoid cleaning your earrings near a sink or basin, or at least put the plug in. They’ll be slippery and you don't want to lose them down the drain (speaking from experience!)
- Mix a few tablespoons of mild dishwashing liquid with some warm water.
- Let them soak for 15-20 minutes to soften the grime.
- Then gently brush with a soft bristled brush. An old toothbrush is perfect.
- Then rinse off with clean water, pat dry with a cloth and voila! Beautiful clean earrings!
How Often Should You Clean Your Earrings
This really depends on how often you wear them! If you have a few pairs on high rotation getting a lot of wear, then it’s a good idea to clean them about once a month. For others, you can simply wipe them off after each wear and give them a proper clean when they’re looking a little dull.
If you’ve got quite a few pairs you haven't worn for a while, just give them a quick dust off with a soft cloth before wearing. This will bring back the shine and lustre - you’d be surprised how dusty they can get sitting in your jewellery box!

How to Clean Silver Earrings
Cleaning your silver earrings at home is also really easy with the right know-how. Silver needs a little extra love and as the metal is relatively soft it’s best to clean them with a microfibre cloth after wearing them.
You can also use a silver polishing cloth and a little bit of silver polish to bring back the shine or use some dishwashing liquid as above. Just remember to be very careful and not rub too hard to prevent damaging your pieces.
Another easy way to clean your silver earring is just to wear them! The natural oils from your skin can help clean your silver earrings so enjoy them!
How to Clean Gold Earrings
Gold earrings should be cleaned with a soft cloth and some dish soap or jewellery cleaner. Depending on the amount of gold in your earrings they can be quite soft and susceptible to dents and scratches so a gentle touch is always best. Giving them a quick wipe with a dry cloth will generally do the job, but if you’re after a deeper clean follow the steps above.
How to Clean Gemstone Earrings
Gemstone earrings need a little extra love and care and can generally be cleaned with a soft polishing cloth. For a more thorough clean, they can be washed by hand using warm water, soap and a soft brush if necessary. But please be careful! Gems like pearls can be very sensitive to chemicals and some gems are quite soft so make sure you know what your precious items are made of before you start cleaning.
Always make sure you dry your earrings thoroughly when you’re done to prevent any damage to the stones or metals. Give them a dry with a soft cloth and make sure they’re 100% dry before packing them away.
Cleaning your earrings at home is simple when you know how! With a little bit of care and a delicate touch you can have your earrings looking good as new in no time!
